VIDEO PROJECTS
The bulk of my assignments entailed various video projects intended to raise awareness for ongoing programs the Department of Corrections were performing or to drum up applications for hiring applications at the various institutions across the state.
“Meet the Team” – A video made to advertise career opportunities at the Clarinda Correctional Facility in Clarinda, Iowa, and why one should consider employment there.
“Riot Control Training” – This video was commissioned by the Clarinda Correctional Facility to showcase its Riot Training Program, and was presented to officers who would soon be engaging in the program.
“Training Ops” – This video was commissioned by the Clarinda Correctional Facility to be shown to officers in training who would soon be participating in training ops. The footage was played while a Training Officer narrated what was happening on screen and why the procedures were being performed as such.
“Why Hire Returned Citizens” – A video commissioned by the three women featured in the video to explain to prospective employers the value of hiring former felons returning to the work-force (it should be noted that this project was on-going at the time of my departure from my program, but is featured here as I am proud of the work put into this last draft)
“Consider a Career in Corrections” – This video was a short spot compiled of footage taken at the Iowa State Penitentiary, intended to be shared on social media and possibly targeted local television networks.

Women’s Correctional Institution Hosts Meals from the Heartland – an article that involved the Iowa correctional Institute for Women partnering with Meals from the Heartland for food distribution to problematic areas.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
One of my assignments was to redesign the Department of Corrections website with redesigned graphics and a more consistent formatting plan. I have highlighted which images below were redesigns done by myself.
Fig. 1- The banner for the Department of Corrections website was formerly a generic picture of the State Capitol with the tagline “Creating Opportunities for Safer Communities.” My supervisor, Cord Overton, felt that the banner did not properly represent the Department and tasked me with redesigning the graphic. The building in the photo is the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women, and the logo featured is a high resolution version of the Department logo on low opacity.
Fig. 2- The Judicial Map of Iowa that the Department had been using for hiring brochures and various literature was antiquated and used font that, when the image was transformed either smaller or larger, lost legibility. I took a blank map of Iowa, outlined each of the 8 Judicial districts, manually labeled each of Iowa’s 99 counties, and labeled each of the 9 penitentiaries and 8 Community Based Corrections facilities. The project ended up taking nearly a week and a half.
A similar map was made that also included the 20 Residential Facilities, which was then featured in the Department of Corrections Hiring Brochure.
Another banner, which is one of many that will be produced to be featured on the website on a periodic basis, features a photograph from the old Iowa State Penitentiary in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
